I describe my art work as conceptual abstraction, this context allows me explore the relationship of language both as written and visual information.

My paintings and prints emerge from several projects that I switch between in my studio practice, they often entwine and the boundaries of each project disappear and become one.

These artworks can be described as,

“Visual experiments engaging traditional artistic values applying a contemporary conceptuality.”

The focus of my work is to produce art that is visually interesting, but has more to offer than a pleasant object to look at. Current themes evident in my work are the relationship of text and image, proposing writing as pure mark-making and drawing as word objects, almost a role reversal of function and aesthetic. I am interested in the history of the written language from 7,000 years ago to the present day. The majority of the art I make is process driven, the making of the work is an important factor in my practice, the craft/skill is something that endures in the imagery. Incorporating a tradition of skill which can be traced back through history to William Morris and the Arts and Craft movement. This is relative to the aesthetic of each piece and the importance of visual interpretation and the beautiful.

I recently completed an MA in Fine Art Studio Practice at the University of Central Lancashire, prior to this I studied at The University of Chester and Edinburgh College of Art. I worked as an artist producing murals and decorative painting effects for over 25 years before that, which took me across the world. My paintings and prints have been purchased by art lovers in France, Ireland, The USA, the Channel Islands and the UK mainland.
